Unser Thema: Risk Management – Crucial Skill or Meaningless Chore?

Risk Management is probably one of the most ambivalent tasks a project manager faces: On the one hand he is officially requested to do it – there may be even legal regulations that may require it. And of course, rationally it seems a natural way to prepare for all the bad things that may happen, and – best – to prevent them from happening. On the other hand, for all those who have done risk management in the past, the whole story often boils down to the task of filling out meaningless risk lists with no noticeable benefit for the project. Hence, emotionally, it seems best to keep the effort low.

The success of risk management is therefore strongly coupled to its emotional acceptance by all stakeholders – foremost of the project manager and the sponsor. To gain this acceptance, however, it is necessary to present them with quick, convincing wins, instead of arguing with possible – somehow – ephemeral ‘prevention of things that might happen in the future’.

How risk management can aid in negotiating the basic requirements of the project – namely the time schedule – to a mutual benefit for customer (sponsor) and project manager alike, therefore setting realistic project goals and preventing future conflicts will be demonstrated in this presentation.

Referent: Dr. Andreas Lang, PMP MAPM has been working as a project manager for more than 15 years. His professional background is with SW-development and telecommunications. Currently he is with Realtech Consulting GmbH, Walldorf as trainer and coach for project management and risk management
